Format of Sony Open Golf Tournament

Each player plays four rounds of 18 holes from Thursday to Sunday. The competition starts simultaneously, with each contestant playing the first round on Thursday morning. After the first two rounds (Thursday and Friday), only the top players, usually the top 65 and ties, qualify to play the last two days (Saturday and Sunday).

A cut is made at the end of the second round. If players are tied at 65th, they also advance through the cut. The tournament is conducted using stroke play, where the sum of points in each player throughout all four rounds is recorded.

Players must make each shot, and the red score wins at the end of the 72 holes. If players are tied for first place after 72 holes, a playoff over up to 18 holes is scheduled to decide the winner. The championship is typically (but not usually) contested by extra holes, such as one or two holes. If players continue to be tied after those holes, a 3rd hole is played until a winner is decided. The competition is conducted under the rules of golf as determined by the R&A and USGA.
